Beyond Boarding - Opening a Doggy Daycare
Most of you will find that opening a dog daycare center will be much easier and less costly than a full service boarding facility. This is for two simple reasons. First, in most municipalities, the zoning restrictions for Doggie Daycares are much less restrictive as compared to other pet care businesses. Therefore, there will be much more real estate inventory for you to choose from that will meet your business needs. In fact, because dog daycare is still considered a relatively new industry (about 10 years old), many cities, counties, and states have not directly addressed such businesses either in their zoning ordinances or their animal care statutes. As a result, it often puts dog daycares in the grey area of the law all around the country and leaves the owners of such businesses mostly free to regulate themselves. As a business owner, you must therefore always be conscious that you are putting the care of the animals first even though no regulatory agency will be telling you to do so. Of course, a poorly run business or one that does not consider the welfare of the animals will inevitably fall victim to its own misdealing as customers simply won't use your services. The flip side of this lack of attention to dog daycare businesses from government agencies is that it makes entering the marketplace as a new business owner fairly easy. Typically, and depending also on the size of the facility, a doggy daycare business can be opened for under $100,000, which brings us to the second reason that opening a dog daycare is easier. It is less costly than a full service pet care facility. Simply put, dog daycare centers do not require a huge investment in capital equipment or facility improvements as compared with a traditional boarding facility.
